9th Annual Camp MaGIc Charity Golf Classic Raises $30K in Support of Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America’s Camp Oasis

Annual golf tournament uses 100 percent of proceeds to send North Texas children suffering from inflammatory bowel disease to summer camp

DALLAS – May 19, 2008 – The 9th Annual Camp MaGIc Charity Golf Classic raised more than $30,000 on Thursday, May 15, with 100 percent of its proceeds benefiting Camp Oasis 2008, the summer camp for children suffering from Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) in Texas and surrounding states. Camp Oasis, formerly known as Camp MaGIc, is now operated under the auspices of the North Texas chapter of the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA). Funds will be used to pay direct expenses of the cost of camp and other life-enhancing activities for these children.

The concept of a camp for children suffering from IBD was led by John R. Thomas, president and CEO of MedSynergies Inc., a healthcare revenue cycle management company. With the success and popularity of the North Texas camp, CCFA adopted the concept and promoted Camp Oasis nationwide. Over the years, more than 600 campers from five states have participated in the four-day camping experience free of charge.

“Camp MaGIc was founded so children suffering from IBD could enjoy the benefit of a traditional camp experience and spend time with a supportive staff and other kids that deal with the same issues each day,” said Thomas. “Memories, friendships and self-confidence are the products of the Camp MaGIc and Camp Oasis experience for these children. There is an alarming silence around IBD and we feel it is important to raise awareness about this incurable disease. I want these children, and others diagnosed with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, to understand that they are not alone.”

IBD is a chronic, auto-immune disease affecting more than two million Americans, with those numbers steadily increasing in children. Although several suffer from IBD, the condition is rarely discussed, causing many to feel isolated and alone. IBD, which is comprised of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, has no known cure, and the cause remains unknown.

“I feel it is an organization’s responsibility to educate and give back to its community,” said Andy Gabeheart, tournament chairman and president of Office Expo. “I am proud to sponsor Camp MaGIc and be a part of such a special mission and cause.”

Title sponsors of the Camp MaGIc Charity Golf Classic were MedSynergies and Office Expo. Additional sponsors included: Dataside, Bank of America, Jackson & Cooksey, Frank Crystal & Co., Guident Retirement Plans, PlainsCapital Bank, Interstate Batteries, Amegy Bank, IBM/Peek Resources, ExponentHR and HCK2 Partners.

The North Texas chapter of CCFA will be holding this year’s Camp Oasis at Camp John Marc in Meridian, Texas, on August 21 – 24, 2008. To donate to Camp MaGIc and support children’s camp expenses, please contact Tracy McLellan at tmclellan@medsynergies.com or 972-819-0022.
